As the saying goes – “An Ounce of Prevention is worth more than a Pound of Cure”. Living in the tropics can bring some unique health challenges – almost everyone gets a stomach bug at some stage – which can easily lead to dehydration and a day in hospital or clinic on a drip. Typhoid is very common (Typhus). Mosquitoes carry dengue (very common). Moving in and out of Air Conditioning and getting damp from rain – makes it easy to get a chill.
There is a wide range of health services available in Jakarta, with new clinics and hospitals opening all the time. As a result the standard of medical services and care available is improving.
Healthy is a very personal issue so it is hard to make recommendations. For you first experience at the doctor, it may be more comfortable to try SOS or Global Doctor at Kemang.
A new hospital in the BSD area is the Eka Hospital (3 min from SWA) opened by Sinarmas in 2008. Lots of teachers and students have used Eka and reports have been favorable.
Pharmacies are in most malls and a number of pharmacy chains operate 24 hours pharmacies along the main roads in BSD. Medicines are available over the counter without a doctor’s receipt. If you have a standard medicine you can usually get it or an alternative brand of the same drug or a generic over the counter, speak to the chemist on duty (it is advisable to write the name of the medicine as sometimes pronunciation can lead to confusion).
