You will be met at the airport by the host/chaperone noted above, who will take you to the Santika Hotel, where we have reserved a room for you for 14 nights at the schools cost. Hotel comes with breakfast. Other costs at personal expense.

Most new teachers have already confirmed housing, and we are keen to assist you to move into your house (or find one) as soon as possible after you arrive. Generally, we have organized key handover for house the day after your arrival. We recommend you stay in the hotel for at least the first few days to recover from travel, get oriented and buy household supplies.

New Teacher Orientation Week is 25-29 July.  For new teachers arriving on 21-23 July, your host/chaperone, will assist you to make arrangements with you on your plans for the following days up til Monday 25 July as per your interests. For the early bird arrivers 11-20 July, we will arrange for a car to pick you up from hotel at 8.00 the next morning and you will meet with John and Ivan at SWA to help make custom arrangements for you. For those arriving on the 24 July, the day is considered a rest day with nothing planned by the school during the day. A social event is planned for the evening (Sunday), time, location transport arrangements to be advised. All accompanying family members/partners are invited and welcome to join all activities during the week.

All new staff staying at Santika Hotel will be picked up by the SWA bus, from the hotel on Monday 25 July at 8.45 am. Those who have already moved into their houses will be responsible for making their own way to SWA for a 9.00 am start.

The program for the orientation week will be confirmed later, but is focused on getting oriented to Jakarta/Indonesia and getting settled into your houses and becoming independent; and getting  oriented to the school and the way it works. Basically our focus, is helping you sort out your personal needs ready for you to be able to focus on school/teaching the following week and school opening the week after that. The first couple of days of the orientation week are really about housing and getting set up and moving in(or finding housing), and has some flexible time slots for those who have already completed this.

Arriving at the Airport - Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport

Jakarta International Airport can be a chaotic first time experience, but after you’ve done it once is pretty straight forward, and efficient, thought the crowds can be a bit overwhelming. We hope that this information will help you with a smooth arrival and good start to your time in Jakarta!

Immigration

Getting off your flight usually leads to a rush to the immigration lines, which can be quite long. Follow the crowd until you enter the main thoroughfare leading towards the immigration counters. Through the center of this is a travelator.

There are two areas for immigration clearance.

• ·          Tourist Visa on Arrival

o   Use if you are entering on a tourist visa

o   These are located at both the right and left sides of the travelator

o   Line up – pay the $25 fee, proceed to the immigration officer, proceed to baggage area. Recommended to have exact money. If you have larger bill, change will be in Rupiah at a less attractive exchange rate. Not sure what other currencies other than USD and Rupiah can be paid in. Credit card can be used.

 

           

• ·            Immigration for Indonesians and Foreign Residents

o   Use if you have processed your invitation letter at overseas embassy and have a VITAS sticker in you passport – for your purposes that’s the same as KITAS see below.

o   There are many lines – most are dedicated to Indonesians, and usually have long queues – but there are two lines at the right hand side – far right for diplomats, to the left of that for KITAS holders. These two lines are usually quite short and move quickly.

o   Quite a few tourists get caught up in the rush of the crowd and miss the tourist visa area and go to the KITAS line and get sent back from this area, so if you see people being sent away, don’t worry, you are in the correct line.

Baggage

On the way out from Immigration take the left turn to baggage hall. There is a TV screen to show flight baggage collection belts.

There are trolleys available. There are also porters (approximately Rp 20,000) if you want to use them. They will take your ticket stub, find your bags and take it to the car.

Customs Clearance

Everyone must pass through a customs clearance. Hand your completed customs form to the officer, he will instruct you to put all hand held baggage through the X-Ray machine, checked luggage not necessary. Alcohol limit is 1 liter per person, if you have more than that you may get picked up through this screening.

 

Money Changers

After completing customs clearance, you can exit left or right – please exit left, as your chaperone will be waiting at this end. Otherwise you may miss your meet and greet and transfer to hotel.

You will see lines of moneychangers as you proceed to exit. It is recommended that you change money here. You can change at BSD but it is convenient to get some cash here first. All carry the same exchange rate.

Meeting Point

As you proceed to exit – you will see barricades that visitors wait at – look out for someone holding your name, once you spot them, proceed to exit, they will then meet you at the other side of the door. Your chaperone and driver will then take you to the Santika hotel, where one of our staff will check you in. We will also give you an arrival package with plans for the next day.

Hotel Santika

Although the Santika is a 3 star hotel, it is new and quite nice. It is attached to a the Teraskota Mall so its easy to go for a wander. There are many inexpensive food outlets, a pharmacy, cinema, fitness center to distract you. If you need a supermarket you will need to exit the front entrance of Teraskota and cross the road to the Giant Supermarket complex. There are other malls in walking distance of the Santika. If you are feeling like exploring further there are taxis available from the Santika. Your host will provide you with an arrivals Package that has maps and a taxi book and a guide to some nearby destinations. If you are on a morning flight and want to get oriented, let our chaperone know, they will arrange to bring you out to school and we will catch up and help you with some plans.

Should for any reason things not work out and you feel that you need to catch a taxi to the hotel, please advise the Hotel address as follow:

Reimbursements

Please remember to keep all your original receipts, including boarding pass, and any visa receipts as these are needed for our reimbursement processes.

Laptop will be received to the teachers, Monday evening, 25 July 2011.

Early Bird arrivals on 11 – 21 July will receive the laptop on the next working day.

Please note that we have been creating to add these arrival information update to the blog site. We are now adding a new line to the blog Home Page called N T O W (New Teacher Orientation Week).

Everything that we put in the Arrival package and information given out during orientation day this week, will also be provides to this blog.
